When should you use PNG over JPG?
PNG is best when you need pixel-perfect quality with no compression artifacts, or when your image contains text, logos, line art, or flat-color graphics. JPG is a lossy format — every save cycle degrades quality slightly. By converting to PNG you freeze the image in its current state and prevent further quality loss.
PNG transparency and alpha channels
Unlike JPG, PNG supports full alpha-channel transparency. If you're building web graphics or UI assets that need a transparent background, PNG is the right format. After converting, you can open the PNG in any image editor (Photoshop, GIMP, Figma) to remove the background or adjust transparency.
File size trade-offs
- PNG files are typically 3–10× larger than equivalent JPEGs for photographic images.
- For icons, logos, and screenshots, PNG is often smaller than a high-quality JPG.
- If file size matters for a photo, keep it as JPG or use WebP for the best quality-to-size ratio.
