How ASCII art works
ASCII art maps image brightness to text characters. Each small region of pixels is averaged to a brightness value, which is matched to a character based on visual density. Use contrast, brightness, gamma, auto levels, and dithering to improve results. Dense characters like @, #, and % represent dark areas; spaces and lighter characters represent bright areas. Output updates instantly when you change settings.
Best images for ASCII art
- High-contrast black and white photos
- Simple portraits with clear facial features
- Icons, logos, and bold silhouettes
- Transparent PNGs (adjust the background color for transparent areas)
- Tip: use contrast and gamma for low-contrast images
- Avoid: complex photographs with many fine details
