How to Calculate Fuel Cost
USA: Fuel Cost = (Distance in miles ÷ MPG) × Price per gallon. For example, a 300-mile trip in a 30 MPG car at $3.50/gal costs (300 ÷ 30) × $3.50 = $35.00.
Australia: Fuel Cost = (Distance in km ÷ 100) × L/100km × Price per litre. For example, a 480 km trip in a car with 8.5 L/100km at $2.00/L costs (480 ÷ 100) × 8.5 × $2.00 = $81.60.
Tips to Reduce Fuel Costs
- Maintain steady highway speeds — 88–105 km/h (55–65 mph) is most efficient for most vehicles
- Keep tires properly inflated — underinflated tires reduce fuel economy by up to 3%
- Reduce weight — every 45 kg (100 lbs) reduces fuel efficiency by about 1%
- Use cruise control on highways to avoid speed fluctuations
- Service your vehicle regularly — dirty air filters and spark plugs hurt efficiency
