What is amortization?
Amortization is the process of paying off a loan through regular payments over time. Each payment covers interest first, with the remainder reducing principal. Early in the loan, most of each payment is interest. Toward the end, most goes to principal.
How do I read the amortization table?
- Principal — how much of that year's payments reduced your balance
- Interest — how much you paid in interest that year
- Balance — remaining loan balance at year end
